Favorite Maternity Clothes

When it comes to maternity clothes, they can really run the gamut. I’ve had a multifaceted approach I’m going to explain here, and I’m going to include links to some of my absolute favorite products!

Buying Used/Borrowing

I love thrifty options for pretty much everything (including saving over $1300 on our nursery!), and maternity clothes are no exception. However, sometimes you may feel like your options are somewhat limited. Here are some things I tried and how they panned out for me:

  • Borrowing from friends or getting hand-me-downs. I got some items from a family member, but I don’t currently have friends or family members who have a stash of maternity clothes that would fit me that I could borrow or inherit. So this option didn’t work particularly well for maternity clothes.

  • Buying used or getting free through a Buy Nothing Group — I love using Facebook Marketplace to buy used items and my local Buy Nothing Group for household items, but it’s tricky with clothing. I did get some items from a mom in my neighborhood, and it was so generous! However, it’s hard to gauge size with such a variety of brands and no opportunity to try things on and return them. I had the same concerns with ThredUP, which I normally love.

Buying at a Local Store

I looked at places around me to shop in person for maternity clothes, and honestly, they’re few and far between here. Maybe that’s the case for you, too!

  • I prioritize natural fabrics and practices, along with companies that support moms, and I had a hard time finding stores that had any options besides what falls into the category of fast fashion.

  • Some places, like Goodwill (at least in MN), no longer have fitting rooms, so it’s not really any better than shopping online.

  • Shopping online is so much more convenient! And if you have a tape measure handy, most stores have sizing charts to help you pick the right size.

What I Chose

Ultimately, what I decided to do was buy quality pieces new and buy some additional pieces secondhand to supplement them. I just had to choose which items fell into which category.

I’m not entirely sure how I stumbled upon Kindred Bravely, but I’m so glad I did! I’ve gotten all of my maternity bras and underwear there, along with several other items I don’t think I could have done without. Here are some of my favorites:

  • Grow with me and bamboo underwear (different styles and colors to choose from) - these are currently on a promotion of 7 for $49, and I can’t recommend them enough! Whether you want the super stretchy grow with me line (I loved the under-bump style earlier in pregnancy and the higher brief later in pregnancy) or the thicker bamboo hipster that’s oh-so-comfortable too, you really can’t go wrong! The beauty of these is that they truly are made to grow with your changing body, so you don’t have to repeatedly buy new underwear.

  • Nursing/pumping bras - I just bought their limited-time pumping bundle that has three nursing bras (you choose from their sports bra version or classic pumping bra version) and some nursing pads, and I didn’t want to take them off when I got them! There’s also a nursing bra deal (3 bras + nursing pads for $99), but I decided I wanted the additional flexibility to be able to pump hands-free. I do think their bras run small, so make sure you check their sizing tips and guide!

  • Signature Sublime contour nursing & maternity bra - these are what I’ve been wearing most days, and I’m loving them! I love that the padding is fixed, so it’s not bunching or moving around, and they’re really stretchy, so between that and the bra band extender that KB sends with all hook-and-eye closure bras, I’m confident these will continue to grow with me. Again, I think KB’s bras run a little large, so make sure to check the sizing guide!

  • Esme tie nursing & maternity dress - this is the dress I’ve been taking all of my bump pictures in, and it’s accommodating my growth so well! I also love that it has easy nursing access for after baby is born.

  • joggers - I have a single pair of their joggers in the oatmeal color, and they’re so soft and cozy! They’re also included in the current Cozy Mom Lounge Bundle.

  • Louisa support maternity & postpartum leggings - these are hands down my FAVORITE leggings, and I have my eye on another pair in another color! They’re stretchy, soft, and crazy supportive throughout pregnancy, and I imagine they’ll be a lifesaver postpartum for giving support where it’s needed.

  • pj bras/lounge/nursing bras - I have a few of these as I quickly outgrew the other bras I wear for lounging and sleeping. I have the French Terry lounge bras and the Sublime Adjustable Crossover Bra. The French terry version is thinner and very soft, but keep in mind there isn’t any padding if you prefer padding. The Sublime Adjustable bra is just what it says— adjustable and sublime. I love how stretchy it is (a bit more than the French terry), and it is padded, which is my personal preference.

  • thigh savers - I had a couple of pairs of shorts to wear under dresses pre-pregnancy, and they fit through my first and second trimester, but they couldn’t keep up with my bump after that. Enter KB’s thigh savers! You can buy a single pair or get a set of three so you can pick the right color to wear under your clothes and know that you have extras if one (or two) are in the wash.

  • bamboo everyday nursing & maternity tee - I got mine as part of a bundle back when I discovered I was pregnant (it was such a fun way for me to celebrate by treating myself!), and I love it! I will say I find these run a little large.

Maternity clothes can be a bit of an investment, but this is how I look at it:

  • many of the pieces I chose will last through the postpartum stage with me and potentially become regular wardrobe staples after that (bras, lounge clothes)

  • the pieces will stick with me through (hopefully, Lord willing) multiple pregnancies, saving me time and energy having to replace cheaper, poor-quality alternatives sooner

  • I focused on staple pieces and chose to supplement my KB orders from other sources

Why I Love Kindred Bravely

Why did I choose to buy products from Kindred Bravely specifically? Here are my top reasons.

  • It’s a company created for moms, by moms. That means they know what they’re doing. It’s not mass-produced as an addition to non-maternity items. It’s geared specifically toward moms and moms-to-be!

  • They donate proceeds and products to other organizations like Free the Girls, March of Dimes, Project Sunshine, the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, and more!

  • I tested their products and truly loved them. I wouldn’t support them if I didn’t believe in them, and I found their quality for the price to be unmatched anywhere else.

  • You can return items (unless they’re marked final sale), so there’s less stress about getting the wrong size.

  • They include photos and videos of a wide variety of models so you can get an idea of how a product might fit on someone with your body type.

  • They have a blog with tons of helpful articles and resources for moms.
